The zen of prime lenses

I've always been a major advocate of prime lenses. They're small, stealthy, fast, generally affordable, and they promote creative compositions. If you're going to have one prime lens for all photo applications the 35mm might just be the one to go for, it provides a near standard view which means after just a little bit of time with the lens you understand how to compose your shots without having to bring your camera up to your eye.

In the shot above, I was leaving Civic Center Station in San Francisco when I saw this guy skate up to the escalator. I knew there was a shot to be made, I ran after him. My familiarity with the 35mm focal length allowed me to react instantly and take the shot in one swift motion, if I had to fumble around with a zoom lens I likely would have missed the shot.
